The Cavemen TV Launch

Tonights the night that the Cavmen TV show debutes..Get all the reviews and caveman news here.

Lead character Joel (Bill English) is engaged to a beautiful modern woman who loves him for the caveman that he is, though her family hasn't yet accepted him. Nick (Nick Kroll) is the cynical best friend who sees judgment everywhere and lashes out frequently. And Joel's little brother, Andy (Sam Huntington), is an easygoing fellow, perhaps a little slow on the uptake, who's oblivious to others' opinions of him.

The three guys consistently find themselves in situations where they have to deal with misunderstandings and stereotypes associated with cavemen. Most of the circumstances are outright gags -- don't expect much subtle humor here. What little depth the show has comes from its allusions to modern race relations. For example, when money goes missing at a party, all eyes immediately turn suspiciously toward the central trio -- the only cavemen in attendance -- pointing, albeit lightly, toward the embedded racism of mainstream society.

While the caveman gags may soon wear thin, the cavemen-as-minority formula is actually a good opportunity to discuss racial and other types of prejudice with your teens. The Cro-Magnons serve as a safe proxy for oppressed groups because they're so unreal, but their experiences can shine a light on what certain groups really go through. Of course, the danger here is that sometimes the show's lightweight approach to the serious subject of race ends up feeling like belittlement rather than examination. 'Cavemen' Sitcom Makes Changes For First Show

'Cavemen' Sitcom Evolves Its Debut

LOS ANGELES (AP) — "Cavemen" had to undergo a pre-debut evolution. A new first episode with a new setting — San Diego instead of Atlanta — will air when the sitcom begins 8 p.m. EDT Tuesday.

ABC announced in July that the pilot didn't properly introduce the idea of Cro-Magnon buddies living in modern society and would be redone. The producers, meanwhile, found it difficult to fake Atlanta in the production based in Los Angeles.

Acknowledging they already faced skepticism about how the Geico insurance company TV commercials would translate to a series, executive producers Will Speck and Josh Gordon said this week they're hopeful that "Cavemen" will attract viewers and make them laugh.

"It feels like its origin is somewhat polluted, like it's taking advantage of something that's popular in the culture," Speck said, referring to the commercials. "But there's places to go (with the series) and specific stories to tell, and we feel really proud about the cast."

"Cavemen" stars Bill English, Nick Kroll and Sam Huntington. One of the original cavemen, Jeff Daniel Phillips, will appear as a recurring character.

The spots wittily depict shaggy-looking cavemen chafing at misconceptions about their sophistication and intelligence. The series follows another trio of Cro-Magnons battling bias as they try to fit into a world that believes (wrongly, as the show has it) they're extinct.

It's unusual for characters from an advertising campaign to move into shows of their own, but not unprecedented. The short-lived CBS comedy "Baby Bob" featured a talking baby that had been used in several commercials.

"Cavemen" will have to strike a different tone than that of the drier, low-key Geico commercials, said Speck and Gordon, who directed the original campaign written by Joe Lawson (also a series developer).

The pair, who teamed to direct the Will Ferrell big-screen comedy "Blades of Glory," still get a kick out of the concept of modern cavemen with relationships and jobs. One character works at an Ikea-like store called Norsbild.

The debut, which ABC said was still in production and unavailable for preview, finds one of the cavemen hiding from his buddies that he's dating a Homo sapiens woman. The producers were game when asked to describe scenes that might make viewers laugh.

"The cavemen playing squash is always really funny to us," Gordon said. He also cited a bit in which one of the hirsute cavemen (the actors undergo extensive makeup) is offended by someone's offhand remark about "The Flintstones."

In July, when the producers and cast attended the Television Critics Association meeting, they were asked if the prejudice the cavemen faced in the pilot — for instance, that they were athletically superior — was intended to echo the stereotyping that blacks face.

Not at all, the producers said, reiterating that position again this week. While the show is about how people treat minorities it has nothing to do with any specific real-life group, they said.
"We're creating a new fake group and having fun with what people think about cavemen," Gordon said. "For us, the primary focus is for people to think the show is funny and something different, much more so than thinking ... about what everything is standing for

The Latest Buzz News On Cavemen TV

The pilot episode of Cavemen, the ABC sitcom based on Geico's ad campaign, was proclaimed Most Popular So it's no surprise that Cavemen now ranks among the highest-rated new fall shows, at least in terms of viewer buzz. It actually placed second to NBC's Bionic Woman remake in a TV Dailies poll. If both shows end up lacking in quality, perhaps they could join forces. There's clearly crossover potential here. True fans will recall that the original Bionic Woman, played by the inimitable Lindsay Wagner (shown here), battled a hairy nemesis. It was a Sasquatch, actually, played by Ted "Lurch" Cassidy from The Addams Family! But that's close enough to a caveman.

CAVEMAN TV FACTS AND TIDBITS

Cavewoman, cave-parents, cave-grandparents, and a subgroup of cavemen who try to deny their identity by constantly shaving their distinctive facial hair, will all be introduced later in the show's run. Again, if it gets that far.

--Critics battered the all-white, all-male panel of producers and stars for trying to tackle issues of diversity and prejudice against a minority group, even a non-existent one. Numerous critics pointed out that the stereotypes (great dancers! athletic! known for their sexual prowess!) displayed by the cavemen in the pilot seemed to fit stereotypes about African-Americans, but the producers denied that was the case.

--The caveman makeup takes three hours to apply, and often includes body hair, sometimes put on via hair-covered arm sleeves.

--Don't expect to see Geico ads featuring the cavemen once the show hits the air. No new commercials are being made, and the current ads are likely to be suspended at least while the show runs. Geico owned the cavemen characters, but struck a deal with ABC so the network could do the show. (ABC president Steve McPherson earlier said that there is no deal regarding commercials that run during the show, so it's possible you'll see commercials for other insurance agencies running during "Cavemen.") Geico executives are enthused about the show and rooting for it to succeed, producers said.

--Creator Joe Lawson said the show is not about the same cavemen from the ads. "I always see it as these cavemen are the cousins of the cavemen in the commercials," Lawson said. "So the guys in the commercials are doing their own thing and living their own lives, and then ours are kind of off on their own tangents. There may be some similar crossover, but it would be incidental if that happens."

ABC developing 'Cavemen'
Comedy pilot based on Geico ads
By MICHAEL SCHNEIDER
ABC pilot will ape insurance company Geico's caveman characters.

Winner for most unusual piece of development this pilot season goes to ABC, which has turned a series of quirky Geico commercials into an actual half-hour comedy project.
"Cavemen" will revolve around three pre-historic men who must battle prejudice as they attempt to live as normal thirtysomethings in modern Atlanta.

Project, from ABC TV Studio, is penned by Joe Lawson, an advertising copywriter who was behind the "Caveman" ads -- as well as other Geico commercials (think the cockney-speaking Geico gecko, and the reality TV spoof "Tiny House").

Daniel Rappaport, Guymon Cassady, Will Speck and Josh Gordon are exec producers. Speck and Gordon, commercial directors who recently helmed the Will Farrell feature "Blades of Glory," are on board to also direct.

The single-camera laffer pilot is based on the Geico ads that promote the insurance company's Web site as so user-friendly that even "a caveman could do it." The spots follow cavemen in modern settings, reacting with offense to the derogatory slogan. In one, a Geico spokesman apologizes and takes the Neanderthals out to dinner.

Other blurbs include the sensitive, modern cavemen peeved at the offending slogan while encountering Geico ads in everyday life, including the airport.

The caveman commercials were created through the Richmond, Va.-based Martin Agency. Jeff Daniel Phillips and Ben Weber play the cavemen in the Geico spots; no word if they'll make the transformation to the TV project.

Few TV shows have come out of the commercial sphere; more frequently, TV characters live on in 30-second spots long after their shows are canceled (think "ALF").

But it's not without precedence: The 2002 CBS comedy "Baby Bob" revolved around a talking baby character that was first seen in a series of dot.com ads. After the Eye canceled "Baby Bob," the character returned to its commercial roots, spending time as a pitchman (pitchbaby?) for Quizno's Subs.

Sam Huntington To Star In Caveman Tv Series

Bill English leaves series; is replaced.
Sam Huntington has been tapped to star in ABC's much-talked-about upcoming comedy series Cavemen. Inspired by the popular Geico insurance commercials, the series is undergoing some retooling before it goes on air.

Huntington will play a new caveman character, Andy, the younger brother of Joel (Bill English). Andy, who lives in their small hometown, comes to Atlanta to visit his brother after breaking up with his girlfriend.

Andy will replace Jamie, Joel's easygoing little brother character, played in the pilot by Dash Mihok.

Cavemen will continue to revolve around three modern cavemen--Joel, Joel's younger brother, and Joel's cynical best friend, Nick (Nick Kroll)--as they struggle to fit into society.

The ABC Studios-produced Cavemen will not launch with the pilot but with another yet-to-be-filmed first episode, which is said to be delving more into the cavemen's backstories.

The original pilot (with Jamie's scenes reshot) is expected to air later in the season.

Huntington, who played Jimmy Olsen in Warner Bros. Pictures' Superman Returns, voiced one of the lead characters in Fox's animated comedy pilot Two Dreadful Children this past development season. He appears next in the Weinstein Co.'s Fanboys.

CAVEMAN TV

Cavemen revolves around Joel, his younger brother Andy and best friend Nick. Joel is engaged to Kate. Even though he has some problems with her conservative parents accepting him, he is happy with his life and pursuing the American Dream. The pilot is based on the Geico commercials that claim their service is so easy, "Even a caveman can do it".

SERIES PREMIERE: October 2 at 8/7c

They have been around since the dawn of time, survived the Ice Age and witnessed the evolution of the Homo sapiens, making them one of the world's oldest minorities. Keeping mostly to themselves over the millennia and living in remote communities, a small number of cavemen -- and cavewomen -- have been slowly migrating from these sub-societies and attempting to acclimate themselves to the Homo sapien world. Needless to say, this has proven difficult.

Meet three cavemen who have successfully made the move to San Diego and are just trying to fit in. Joel (Bill English) is a sophisticated and intelligent man who has a beautiful girlfriend, a decent job and shares an apartment with his younger brother, Andy (Sam Huntington, Superman Returns), and his best friend, Nick (Nick Kroll, VH1's Best Week Ever).

Nick is wary of the Homo sapien world and feels like he's running away from his heritage. Andy, on the other hand, looks at this new world with his eyes wide open and is willing to take risks in order to learn and to live life to the fullest.

Nick questions Joel on many of his choices, including his girlfriend, Kate (Kaitlin Doubleday, The TV Set), a beautiful Homo sapien woman and high society southern belle. The fact that Kate's eccentric mother, Leslie (Julie White, Tony Award winner for The Little Dog Laughed), owns Joel's condominium complex makes things even more complicated for the three roommates.

Meanwhile, Kate's best friend, Thorne (Stephanie Lemelin), is intent on discovering the cavemen's wilder side.

Joel, Nick and Andy have to overcome prejudice from most of the Homo sapien world and the misconceptions that modern society has of its earliest ancestors. In order for these cavemen to survive in the 21st century, they must work together to render those misconceptions extinct.

Cavemen stars Bill English as Joel, Nick Kroll as Nick, Sam Huntington as Andy, Kaitlin Doubleday as Kate, Stephanie Lemelin as Thorne and Julie White as Leslie.
