The Latest Buzz News On Cavemen TV

The pilot episode of Cavemen, the ABC sitcom based on Geico's ad campaign, was proclaimed Most Popular So it's no surprise that Cavemen now ranks among the highest-rated new fall shows, at least in terms of viewer buzz. It actually placed second to NBC's Bionic Woman remake in a TV Dailies poll. If both shows end up lacking in quality, perhaps they could join forces. There's clearly crossover potential here. True fans will recall that the original Bionic Woman, played by the inimitable Lindsay Wagner (shown here), battled a hairy nemesis. It was a Sasquatch, actually, played by Ted "Lurch" Cassidy from The Addams Family! But that's close enough to a caveman.

CAVEMAN TV FACTS AND TIDBITS

Cavewoman, cave-parents, cave-grandparents, and a subgroup of cavemen who try to deny their identity by constantly shaving their distinctive facial hair, will all be introduced later in the show's run. Again, if it gets that far.

--Critics battered the all-white, all-male panel of producers and stars for trying to tackle issues of diversity and prejudice against a minority group, even a non-existent one. Numerous critics pointed out that the stereotypes (great dancers! athletic! known for their sexual prowess!) displayed by the cavemen in the pilot seemed to fit stereotypes about African-Americans, but the producers denied that was the case.

--The caveman makeup takes three hours to apply, and often includes body hair, sometimes put on via hair-covered arm sleeves.

--Don't expect to see Geico ads featuring the cavemen once the show hits the air. No new commercials are being made, and the current ads are likely to be suspended at least while the show runs. Geico owned the cavemen characters, but struck a deal with ABC so the network could do the show. (ABC president Steve McPherson earlier said that there is no deal regarding commercials that run during the show, so it's possible you'll see commercials for other insurance agencies running during "Cavemen.") Geico executives are enthused about the show and rooting for it to succeed, producers said.

--Creator Joe Lawson said the show is not about the same cavemen from the ads. "I always see it as these cavemen are the cousins of the cavemen in the commercials," Lawson said. "So the guys in the commercials are doing their own thing and living their own lives, and then ours are kind of off on their own tangents. There may be some similar crossover, but it would be incidental if that happens."

SERIES PREMIERE: October 2 at 8/7c

They have been around since the dawn of time, survived the Ice Age and witnessed the evolution of the Homo sapiens, making them one of the world's oldest minorities. Keeping mostly to themselves over the millennia and living in remote communities, a small number of cavemen -- and cavewomen -- have been slowly migrating from these sub-societies and attempting to acclimate themselves to the Homo sapien world. Needless to say, this has proven difficult.

Meet three cavemen who have successfully made the move to San Diego and are just trying to fit in. Joel (Bill English) is a sophisticated and intelligent man who has a beautiful girlfriend, a decent job and shares an apartment with his younger brother, Andy (Sam Huntington, Superman Returns), and his best friend, Nick (Nick Kroll, VH1's Best Week Ever).

Nick is wary of the Homo sapien world and feels like he's running away from his heritage. Andy, on the other hand, looks at this new world with his eyes wide open and is willing to take risks in order to learn and to live life to the fullest.

Nick questions Joel on many of his choices, including his girlfriend, Kate (Kaitlin Doubleday, The TV Set), a beautiful Homo sapien woman and high society southern belle. The fact that Kate's eccentric mother, Leslie (Julie White, Tony Award winner for The Little Dog Laughed), owns Joel's condominium complex makes things even more complicated for the three roommates.

Meanwhile, Kate's best friend, Thorne (Stephanie Lemelin), is intent on discovering the cavemen's wilder side.

Joel, Nick and Andy have to overcome prejudice from most of the Homo sapien world and the misconceptions that modern society has of its earliest ancestors. In order for these cavemen to survive in the 21st century, they must work together to render those misconceptions extinct.

Cavemen stars Bill English as Joel, Nick Kroll as Nick, Sam Huntington as Andy, Kaitlin Doubleday as Kate, Stephanie Lemelin as Thorne and Julie White as Leslie.
